Migrating a Live WooCommerce Store With Zero Downtime
Key Takeaways & Executive Summary
  • Standard migration plugins pause orders or cause cart session data loss on busy stores.
  • The Dual-Write strategy ensures continuous order capture throughout database cutover.
  • Reducing DNS TTL 48 hours prior to launch prevents multi-hour ISP caching delays.
  • Automated post-migration WP-CLI scripts verify order ID sequence and payment webhooks.

The High-Stakes WooCommerce Migration Challenge

Migrating a simple brochure website is easy: clone the files, import the database, change the DNS. If something breaks, no money is lost.

Migrating an active WooCommerce store generating $20,000 daily with hundreds of transactions an hour is a completely different beast. If you put the store into maintenance mode for 4 hours, the client loses thousands in revenue. If you don't sync orders properly, customer payments are charged on Stripe but have no corresponding order record in WordPress.

DNS TTL Preparation (T minus 48 Hours)

48 hours before migration, lower the TTL (Time to Live) on all DNS A records to 300 seconds (5 minutes). This ensures that when the final IP change is published, global DNS resolvers update almost instantaneously.

The Dual-Write & Maintenance Mode Avoidance Strategy

1. Initial Sync: Rsync files and clone the base database to the new server 24 hours prior.

2. Freeze Configuration: Ban plugin installs or theme edits on the old server.

3. Cutover Hour: Point Cloudflare DNS to the new server.

4. Delta Query: Export only orders, order items, and user records created between initial clone and DNS propagation.

export-delta-orders.sh
bash
#!/bin/bash
# Export only orders created after initial sync timestamp
wp db query "SELECT * FROM wp_posts WHERE post_type IN ('shop_order', 'shop_order_placehold') AND post_date >= '2026-01-29 02:00:00';" > delta_orders.sql
wp db query "SELECT * FROM wp_woocommerce_order_items WHERE order_id IN (SELECT ID FROM wp_posts WHERE post_type = 'shop_order' AND post_date >= '2026-01-29 02:00:00');" > delta_items.sql

# Import directly into the new target database
wp db import delta_orders.sql
wp db import delta_items.sql

Database Delta Sync with WP-CLI

By syncing only the specific order tables rather than dumping the whole database, the synchronization completes in under 15 seconds without locks on customer sessions.

Post-Cutover Verification Protocol

Immediately test live checkout with a real $1 transaction through Stripe and PayPal. Verify order confirmation emails, webhook delivery to n8n or fulfillment centers, and confirm that SSL certificates and HTTP/2 connections are resolving properly across global edge nodes.
